Michael Alago “Joe’s Back” 2009

I came across a sleeper show yesterday. Although its not a museum setting, many of the images are worthy of a detour. Among the worthy images and artists that I saw are Catherine Opie, Richard Renaldi, Judy Linn, and my friend from graduate school, Paola Ferrario. Others, that I didn’t see yet, include Alix Lambert, Larry Clark, Assume Vivid Astro-Focus, and Kiki Smith. Its wonderful to see work of this quality casually placed in hallways instead of a whitebox gallery setting.

The Center (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Center)
208 West 13th Street (off Seventh Avenue)
Through September 7th, 2010

The omnipresent and excellent Flak Photo has published an image from my recent series On the Edge of Somewhere on the home page. Andy Adams (twitter handle: FlakPhoto; facebook: http://www.facebook.com/flakphoto), in case you dont know, is a great resource for all things contemporary photography, and offers a constantly changing but consistently outstanding view of new photography.

This series, more of which can be seen at www.stevegiovinco.com, are about intimate and emotional relations between couples. The images are taken from daily life, and the subjects are myself and my wife. I focus on unguarded moments showing a couple eating, resting, talking, feeling bored, listless, being sexual, et cetera—living—to capture intimate psychological and emotional feelings between two people. Influences have been the films of Fassbinder and Ingmar Bergman and renaissance and Nineteenth Century painting. I see what is in front of me, feel an emotional and visceral connection, and capture this in photographs. Documenting how people live their lives, my photographs trace the poetry and lyricism of daily life.
