Before I Went to Bed at 2am, This is What I Saw: Night and Northern Lights Over Greenland

Looking Up Towards the Ice Sheet of Greenland at Night

Before I went to bed, at about 2am, this is what I saw near my tent–the aurora borealis (Northern Lights). The movement overhead and closeness was actually terrifyingly beautiful; oddly, the moon also illuminated the scene during this longish exposure.

This was part of a fine art photographic project awarded by the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s grant, which allowed me to spend a month taking pictures mostly at night in Southern Greenland. The time was mid-September and was fairly chilly at night.
