Steve Giovinco at the School of Visual Arts: Photographing Greenland Landscapes in the Dark

I am thrilled to announce that I have been invited to speak at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City as part of their prestigious i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series.

Presented by SVA’s MPS Digital Photography program and curated by Julie Grahame, the i3 series has featured over 250 leading photographers and industry experts since 2011. It is an incredible honor to join this roster and share my work with the SVA community and the public on Tuesday, April 21st.

What I’ll Be Discussing During this talk, I will be discussing my meditative process for documenting sites of climate change in Greenland. The SVA event description mentions my use of “extreme darkness,” but I want to dive deeper into what it actually feels like and requires to shoot long-exposure night landscapes in some of the world’s most fragile environments.

I will be sharing stories and images from my recent work, specifically focusing on two grant-supported trips to the arctic with the support of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. We will explore how these long, quiet exposures in the dark allow us to see a subtlety ephemeral, profound presence in the land.

If you are interested in fine art photography, the intersection of art and climate change, or the technicalities of extreme low-light landscape photography, I would love to see you there and answer your questions!
